Draper residents who use I-80 and I-215 to reach Salt Lake City International Airport lost their last open ramp connection in the interchange Monday night, July 13, when UDOT closed the eastbound I-80 to southbound I-215 ramp for paving and barrier work.

The closure runs through 5 a.m. Wednesday, July 15. But the bigger headache: three other ramps in the same interchange were already shut down, meaning all four connections between I-80 and I-215 near the airport are now closed at once.

How Draper drivers are affected

The standard route from Draper to the airport runs north on I-15 to westbound I-80, then south on I-215 to the terminal. With the westbound I-80 to southbound I-215 ramp closed from an earlier construction phase, outbound airport trips are already disrupted. The Monday night closure of the eastbound I-80 to southbound I-215 ramp now also blocks drivers returning from the airport who need to connect to southbound I-215.

UDOT's July 13 announcement instructed drivers to follow posted detour signs at the interchange. The agency has not published a specific alternate route for this closure phase. During an earlier phase in April, UDOT routed eastbound I-80 traffic via southbound I-15 to westbound State Route 201 to reconnect with southbound I-215, but the agency has not confirmed that route applies now.

What's closed and when it reopens

The four affected ramps, according to UDOT:

  • Eastbound I-80 to southbound I-215 — closed Monday, July 13 through 5 a.m. Wednesday, July 15
  • Eastbound I-80 to northbound I-215 — closed; reopens Monday, July 20
  • Westbound I-80 to northbound I-215 — closed; reopens Monday, July 20
  • Westbound I-80 to southbound I-215 — closed; UDOT does not expect it to reopen until mid-August

"During the closure, crews will pave the ramp connections, replace barriers and restripe the road," UDOT spokesperson Mitch Shaw said in a news release.

More closures ahead

North Temple will fully close between Redwood Road and 2200 West starting Friday night, July 18, through the morning of Monday, July 20. The ramp from Redwood Road to northbound I-215 remains closed until summer 2027, according to UDOT. The ramp from Redwood Road to southbound I-215 is expected to reopen the week of July 20.

The bigger project

The interchange work is part of the I-215 West Improved project, a three-year effort that began in 2025 and is expected to wrap up in 2027. According to UDOT's project page, crews will rehabilitate 30 bridges and improve 14 miles of ramps along I-215 from SR-201 to North Temple.
