One of Draper's most popular trails will shut down for nearly two weeks starting Monday, Aug. 31, as crews build a new connection over 1300 East.

The Porter Rockwell Trail will be closed between Sadler Trailhead and Osborne Trailhead through Friday, Sept. 11, Draper City announced on its official website. The closure allows Lyndon Jones Construction to build a trail segment on an existing Utah Transit Authority bridge spanning 1300 East, linking the Porter Rockwell Trail across the road at the South Mountain Bridge.

That's 12 days off-limits.

The $180,000 project was awarded after UTA finalized agreements for the bridge crossing, according to a capital improvement update presented to the Draper City Council on July 7. Construction was targeted to begin in July with completion expected by fall 2026.

Draper City advised trail users to find alternate routes or detour around the closed segment but did not name specific alternatives.

A heavily used stretch

A 2020 Draper Active Transportation Plan survey found 40 percent of respondents walked the Porter Rockwell Trail each week, making it the city's most popular trail for walking at the time. The closure segment between Sadler and Osborne trailheads sits in the heart of that corridor.

Part of a busy construction week

The trail shutdown is one of several projects Draper announced the week of Aug. 20. Road work on 700 West is expected to last through October, Pioneer Road parking near City Hall will be restricted for three to four weeks, and the Dayland Dog Park closed briefly on Thursday, Aug. 27, and Friday, Aug. 28.

The trail is expected to reopen Sept. 12 based on the stated closure window, though the city has not issued a formal reopening announcement. Residents can check draperutah.gov for updates.
