Older adults in Draper can sign up for a two-hour class on Tuesday, Sept. 29, that links nutrition and strength to fall prevention.

The session, called "Stepping Up Your Nutrition," will be held at the Draper Senior Center, 1148 E. Pioneer Road. It is part of Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services' Active Aging program, which runs evidence-based health classes at 15 county-operated senior centers.

The one-time class covers balanced nutrition for fall prevention and addresses factors that contribute to malnutrition, according to county program materials.

Most Active Aging classes require participants to be 60 or older.

Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death among Americans 65 and older, according to the National Council on Aging, which led Falls Prevention Awareness Week from Sept. 21 through Sept. 25. One in four Americans in that age group falls each year, and the total health care cost of non-fatal older adult falls reached $80 billion per year based on 2020 data, the NCOA reported.

"There are easy, affordable, and proven steps you can take to reduce your risk of falling, so you can maintain your health and independence," Emily Nabors, associate director of innovation for NCOA's Center for Healthy Aging, said in a Sept. 1 statement.

The Draper Senior Center is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. To register or confirm the session's start time, contact the center at 385-468-3330. The Active Aging program can also be reached at 385-468-3082.
