The Canyons School District Board of Education took up a $3.75 million, five-year asphalt repair program at its Tuesday, July 28, summer work session. The district-wide project includes Draper-area campuses such as Corner Canyon High School, Draper Park Middle School, Oak Hollow Elementary, and Draper Elementary.

Listed as a business-session item on the board's agenda, the work covers patching holes, filling cracks, excavating deteriorated surfaces, and laying new asphalt at schools throughout the district. Funding would come from the Capital Funds Budget, a maintenance fund separate from the lease-revenue bonds that have financed major construction at Corner Canyon, Jordan High, Hillcrest High, and Eastmont Middle School.

The agenda listed the item for "discussion and possible action." Official minutes confirming a final vote have not been posted.

The spending adds to an already active capital season for Canyons. The district budgeted $5 million in pay-as-you-go improvements for the 2025-2026 school year, according to a December 2025 board meeting summary. Capital Outlay Fund expenditures hit $103 million in fiscal year 2025, driven largely by construction at Corner Canyon, Jordan, Hillcrest, and three middle schools.

Corner Canyon High alone has a $12.9 million improvement project underway, funded by bonds the board approved in early 2024. That work includes a security vestibule, turf fields, a drainage system, and a new fieldhouse.

Five-year housing plan

Board Member Erin Barrow, who sits on the Facilities Advisory Committee, and Scott Thomas, the district's administrator of auxiliary services, presented a five-year housing plan during the study session. The plan aims to create a timeline for how residential development in Draper and surrounding communities will affect enrollment and staffing at district schools, including Corner Canyon High.

Specific projections have not been made public. The presentation follows the board's May 2025 vote to launch a boundary and enrollment study of eight under-enrolled elementary schools.

Board goals

Board President Niki George led a goal-setting session for the coming year. Richard Stowell, executive director of the Utah School Boards Association, guided a self-assessment exercise, and Stacee Worthen, a counseling consultant in student services, led an activity on empathetic communication.
