Draper could place two of its own in Utah legislative leadership when lawmakers elect new officers on Nov. 6.

Sen. Kirk Cullimore, the Republican Senate Majority Leader representing District 19, is running for Senate President. Rep. Cal Roberts, a freshman Republican representing House District 46, is competing for House Assistant Whip. Both elections are set for 5:30 p.m. that day, as first reported by ABC4.

The races hinge on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Cullimore must first defeat Democrat Shana Anderson in his general election, and Roberts must beat Democrat Braxten Rutherford, before either can compete for a leadership post.

Cullimore, a lawyer seeking a third term, represents a district spanning Sandy, Draper and reaching up Little Cottonwood Canyon to Alta, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. He faces Sen. Evan Vickers of Cedar City for the top Senate seat. Political consultant Taylor Morgan told ABC4 the contest is a genuine toss-up.

"The race for Senate President is shaping up to be a very competitive election, and at this point I think it's genuinely difficult to predict the outcome," Morgan said.

The seat opened after Senate President Stuart Adams lost his June Republican primary to Stephanie Hollist. Morgan said the race centers on urban versus rural interests. The outcome will shape committee assignments, leadership positions and the Senate's policy direction for the 2027 session and beyond, he said.

Roberts, a former Draper City Council member, won his House seat in 2024 after running unopposed in the general election, the Tribune reported. He chairs the Government Operations Committee and co-chairs the Utah Commission on Housing Affordability.

In a Tribune questionnaire, Roberts said he has worked on reforms around tax incentives and independent land authorities. "Taxpayers should not carry the downside while special interests get all the upside," he said.

Roberts faces three other Republicans for the single Assistant Whip spot: Reps. Stephanie Gricius of Eagle Mountain, Jordan Teuscher of South Jordan and Logan Monson of Blanding. That list is based on insider accounts and has not been confirmed by a House official.

The filing deadline is Wednesday, Nov. 4, so the field could still change.
