Corner Canyon opens its bid for a fourth straight 6A state championship Friday against Bingham, but the Chargers won't have home-field advantage all the way through the bracket.

Skyridge's 37-27 win over Corner Canyon during Region 3 play gave the Falcons the region title outright at 4-0 and the No. 1 overall seed, according to the Deseret News' 6A first-round preview published Oct. 29. Corner Canyon landed at No. 3, behind both Skyridge and unbeaten Mountain Ridge.

That seeding matters. If the Chargers advance deep into the bracket, they could face Skyridge or Mountain Ridge on the road.

The Skyridge factor

The Falcons went 8-1 this season. Six of their eight wins came by eight points or fewer, but the Corner Canyon game was not one of them. Skyridge's 37-27 victory was a 10-point margin against a Chargers offense that averages 41.1 points per game, second in 6A.

Skyridge coach Justin Hemm took the Falcons to the 6A title game in 2023, his first season. They lost 13-7 to Lone Peak in last year's semifinals. This year, Skyridge hosts No. 16 Riverton (2-8) on Friday.

Mountain Ridge looms at No. 2

The Sentinels are 6A's only unbeaten team at 10-0. They lead the classification in scoring offense at 45.5 points per game and scoring defense at 11.5. Mountain Ridge won Region 2 outright at 6-0 for a second straight region title.

Their résumé includes wins over No. 1 Skyridge (41-26), No. 4 Herriman (45-7) and No. 5 Davis (42-7). Mountain Ridge also beat Corner Canyon 59-20 in last year's 6A semifinals.

The Sentinels host No. 15 Cedar Valley (1-9) on Friday. Cedar Valley's first-year head coach, Cody Gardner, was Corner Canyon's defensive coordinator for the previous four seasons, according to the Deseret News preview. Gardner spent years game-planning against Region 2-style offenses during his time with the Chargers.

Corner Canyon's season so far

Head coach Casey Sutera is in his first season back at Corner Canyon. He served as Eric Kjar's defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2021, a stretch that included three straight state titles. Kjar left to become Weber State's head coach last December, according to a Deseret News preseason preview published in August.

Sutera spent four seasons as Brighton's head coach before returning, leading that program to back-to-back 5A semifinal appearances.

The Chargers went 8-2 this season. They went 5-1 against 6A playoff teams, beating No. 5 Davis 51-14, No. 7 Lone Peak 37-14, No. 8 American Fork 41-17 and No. 10 Lehi 34-7, and shutting out Cedar Valley. Their losses came at Liberty, Arizona, 38-24 and at Skyridge 37-27.

Corner Canyon averages 41.1 points per game and allows 14.1, both second in 6A behind Mountain Ridge. Quarterback Jaxon Pehrson has 23 passing touchdowns and six rushing touchdowns but has thrown 11 interceptions. Defensive end Wyatt Warner leads the 6A previews with 13 sacks, and the Chargers have recorded 34 sacks, 12 interceptions and seven defensive touchdowns as a team.

Friday's opener

Bingham (3-7) visits Corner Canyon on Friday at 4 p.m. Parry's Power Guide favors the Chargers by 50 points. Corner Canyon leads the all-time series 7-1 and won 45-0 in the teams' last meeting in August 2025.

Bingham averages 18.5 points per game, 13th in 6A, and lost 52-7 to Mountain Ridge and 44-0 at Herriman this season. Three of the Miners' seven losses came by a combined five points.

The Corner Canyon-Bingham winner faces the Westlake-Syracuse winner in the quarterfinals.
