Corner Canyon is two wins from a repeat 6A volleyball title after sweeping No. 8 Bingham 3-0 in Tuesday, Oct. 27's state quarterfinal at the UCCU Center in Orem.
The top-seeded Chargers won by set scores of 25-21, 30-28 and 25-18, as reported by the Deseret News. The second set went to extra points, but Corner Canyon closed it out.
Maija Mortensen led the Chargers with 15 kills. Leah Schaub added eight, and setter Nafanua Alofipo finished with 31 assists.
Corner Canyon coach Mindy Ricks told the Deseret News the team had been working on its mentality heading into the postseason. "We have been working on playing with the mindset, 'Play to win instead of playing not to lose,'" Ricks said.
Ricks added that the Chargers were finally healthy after dealing with injuries in recent weeks, calling the quarterfinal the first time the team had everyone back.
Earlier on Tuesday, Oct. 27, the Chargers dispatched No. 16 Cedar Valley 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-16) in the first round.
Wednesday's semifinal against Lone Peak
Corner Canyon faces No. 4 Lone Peak in Wednesday, Oct. 28's semifinal, scheduled for approximately 10 a.m. at the UCCU Center, according to KSL Sports. Start times are approximate and could shift as the tournament progresses.
The Knights are the only Utah team to beat Corner Canyon this season. Lone Peak won 3-1 on Oct. 13 during Region 3 play, with Ava Burgess recording 30 kills in that match, according to the Daily Herald.
Burgess, a Stanford commit who missed time while playing with USA Volleyball's U19 and U21 national teams and recovering from a knee injury, powered Lone Peak's quarterfinal win over No. 5 Mountain Ridge on Tuesday, Oct. 27. The Deseret News reported she had 17 kills in the match; the Daily Herald reported 21 kills and 14 digs.
Sophomore Chevelle Peters added 12 kills for the Knights, and Cree Cooper had 10.
The Chargers entered the tournament at 27-3, according to the Daily Herald. Lone Peak stands at 18-10.
Wednesday, Oct. 28's other 6A semifinal pairs No. 2 Skyridge against No. 6 American Fork. All four semifinalists come from Region 3.
