Draper families on the Salt Lake County side of the city will send kids back to school two days before their neighbors across the district line. Canyons School District classes for grades 1-12 begin Monday, August 17, while Alpine School District students in grades 1-12 start Wednesday, August 19.
Kindergarten families have even more dates to track. Canyons kindergartners start Wednesday, August 19. Alpine kindergartners don't begin until Tuesday, August 25, a full week after their older classmates.
The split matters because Draper straddles two counties and two school districts. Families living on the Utah County side attend Alpine schools; those on the Salt Lake County side attend Canyons schools, including Corner Canyon High School.
The Alpine start dates, as reported by ABC4 and corroborated by KUTV, mark the last full school year Draper's Utah County families will spend in Alpine School District. Those families are scheduled to transition to the new Aspen Peaks School District on July 1, 2027, according to state legislation approved earlier this year.
Canyons registration opens August 3
As we reported July 22, Canyons District online registration for the 2026-27 school year opens Monday, August 3 at 8:30 a.m. through the district's Skyward Family Access portal. Every student must register. Whether new kindergartners or returning seniors, all must complete the process before the first day of school.
The district launched an upgraded student information system called Skyward Qmlativ on Monday, July 20. Families log in with the same username and password they used before. Those needing help with their Skyward login can call the Canyons Help Desk at 801-826-5544; for Skyward Mobile App issues, call 801-826-5525.
Canyons is also hosting two in-person registration assistance events:
- Wednesday, August 5, 4-7 p.m. at Midvale Middle School, 7852 S. Pioneer St., Midvale
- Thursday, August 6, 4-7 p.m. at Mt. Jordan Middle School, 9351 S. Mountaineer Ln., Sandy
Alpine registration details
Alpine School District has not published its 2026-27 registration timeline in available public sources. Families on Draper's Utah County side should check alpineschools.org or contact the district directly for enrollment deadlines.
Tax hearing August 4
One day after Canyons registration opens, the district holds a Truth-in-Taxation public hearing on Tuesday, August 4 at 6 p.m. at the Board of Education chambers, 9361 S. 300 East, Sandy. The proposed tax rate increase would generate about $6.9 million in additional revenue and cost the owner of an average Canyons home an additional $27 per year, according to Canyons board records.
The hearing starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 4, at 9361 S. 300 East in Sandy.
