A Draper homeowner wants to turn their kitchen into a small baking business, and neighbors will get a chance to weigh in at a July 30 public hearing.

The resident at 478 W. Sandberg Lane has applied for a Home Occupation Conditional Use Permit to operate "Bakehouse Cottage," a home-based business producing baked goods. The applicant's name does not appear in the public notice posted by the city. The Draper Planning Commission will hear the request Thursday, July 30, at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at Draper City Hall, 1020 E. Pioneer Road.

A growing trend in Draper

Bakehouse Cottage is the third cottage bakery to come before the Planning Commission this year. The Cookie Ballery, LLC, at 286 W. Golden Harvest Road, went through a similar hearing Thursday, May 14. Cleancrumb.co, operated by Joely Larson at 12983 S. Fox Crossing Lane, also appeared before the commission. City planner Nick Whittaker has served as staff contact for all three applications.

The pattern reflects a broader shift in Utah, where state law allows home bakers to sell shelf-stable goods after registering with the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food. But the city's conditional use permit is a separate, land-use question: whether running a small business from a residence is compatible with the surrounding neighborhood.

What the permit requires

The $60 CUP application requires the homeowner to detail hours of operation, expected customer traffic, and steps to mitigate neighborhood impacts like noise or parking, according to the city's application checklist. The Planning Commission reviews the request under Draper City Municipal Code sections 9-5-080 and 9-34.

How to participate

Residents who want to comment on the Bakehouse Cottage request can attend the July 30 hearing in person. Those seeking more information can contact Whittaker at (801) 576-6522 or [email protected] to request a copy of the full public notice.
