Thunderstorms dumped up to three-quarters of an inch of rain on Draper on the evening of Thursday, Aug. 13, flooding at least two roads in the city and covering lanes of northbound Interstate 15 with standing water.

The National Weather Service issued a Flood Advisory for south-central Salt Lake County after Doppler radar indicated heavy rain from thunderstorms at 7:11 p.m. The advisory warned of minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas across Draper, Sandy, West Jordan, South Jordan, Riverton, Cottonwood Heights and other communities.

In Draper, flooding was reported on 12100 South State Street and on 100 East from 13800 South to Minuteman Drive, according to Fox 13, citing Draper City. The city advised drivers who encounter flooded streets to turn around and call the non-emergency dispatch line at 801-799-3000 to report conditions.

I-15 and Sandy road closures

Standing water covered the left two lanes of northbound I-15 near 9800 South, including the HOV lane, causing traffic delays during the evening commute, KUTV reported. The 9800 South interchange is a primary access point for Draper commuters heading north.

Sandy City officials confirmed that nearly two miles of 1300 East were closed from 9400 South to 10600 South after significant flooding covered the street. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was also in effect across Salt Lake County during the same period.

The Flood Advisory expired at 8:15 p.m., though the National Weather Service said additional rainfall was expected around 9:30 p.m.

Second major storm in two weeks

Thursday's flooding marks the second significant weather event to hit Draper in recent weeks. A severe thunderstorm on July 29 brought 60 mph wind gusts; the Aug. 13 storm caused flooding rather than wind damage.

The National Weather Service and local agencies repeated standard guidance: do not drive through standing water. Even a few inches can stall a vehicle or sweep it off the road.
