Draper-area residents 60 and older can sign up for a free brain-health class series starting Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Sandy Senior Center.

The 10-week StrongerMemory program meets Tuesdays from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Nov. 17. The first session runs a full hour; after that, weekly classes drop to 30 minutes each. Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services runs the program at the center, located at 9310 S. 1300 East in Sandy.

The program uses three daily exercises: simple math done quickly, reading aloud and writing longhand. Each takes about 10 minutes, practiced four to five days a week between sessions, according to the StrongerMemory website.

StrongerMemory targets people diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, or MCI, and anyone looking to maintain cognitive function. The Alzheimer's Association estimates that 12% to 18% of adults 60 and older live with MCI, and that one-third of those with MCI linked to Alzheimer's disease develop dementia within five years, according to a Goodwin Living report on the program.

A 2021 George Mason University pilot study of 104 participants found statistically significant improvements in memory scores, especially among those with MCI.

Rob Liebreich, president and CEO of Goodwin Living, the organization behind StrongerMemory, described the program's impact in a November 2025 article: "For the first time, they feel like they can do something. They have some control in the matter."

The program has reached more than 58,500 participants through 300-plus partner organizations across 44 states. Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services operates it at 15 senior centers across Utah.

The demand tracks with a growing senior population. Salt Lake County's 60-and-older population rose 19% over the past five years, with projections showing 28% growth over the next decade, according to county officials cited in a November 2025 KSL report.

A second fall cohort meets Thursdays from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the South Salt Lake Senior Center, 2531 S. 400 East in Salt Lake City. That series began Thursday, Sept. 10, and runs through Nov. 12.

Both programs are free. They are open to adults 60 and older. Residents can call 385-468-3340 for details or visit saltlakecounty.gov/aging-adult-services.
