Draper-area residents looking to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks through service can grab gloves and trash bags on Saturday, Sept. 12, along the Jordan River Trail.
The Jordan River Commission is hosting its monthly Second Saturday Trail Cleanup from 10 a.m. to noon at the 7800 S Trailhead and Boat Ramp in Midvale. The September cleanup is also a 9/11 Day of Service event, part of a federally recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance established by Congress in 2009 under the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act.
The commission provides all tools, water and snacks. Registration is required. The location is subject to change.
Why it matters locally
The Jordan River Parkway Trail system ranks as the third most-used trail network in Draper. A third of residents reported using it in the prior year, according to the city's 2023 Parks, Recreation and Trails Master Plan. Trash and debris from roadway curbs and gutters enters the river where it is hard to remove, the commission said in its event listing.
The cleanup is part of the commission's #LoveYourWatershed campaign, a recurring monthly volunteer effort focused on keeping litter and pollutants out of the roughly 50-mile Jordan River corridor that winds through 16 cities across Utah, Salt Lake and Davis counties. It also falls within the Get to the River Festival, a month-long calendar of free events organized by the Jordan River Commission and Jordan River Foundation, according to the commission. The commission and Watershed Council have encouraged groups of friends, neighbors, classmates and coworkers to join service activities tied to the 9/11 anniversary.
Surveys conducted by the nonprofit 9/11 Day estimate that about 35 million Americans observe the anniversary through charitable service each year.
