Corner Canyon's girls volleyball team swept No. 4 Skyridge 25-15, 25-21 and 25-22 on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Corner Canyon High School in Draper.

The Chargers, ranked No. 1 in the state, improved to 10-0 on the season and have dropped just two sets all year. Skyridge entered the match at 15-3, according to the Lehi Free Press. The Daily Herald had billed the contest a "showdown" in its Sept. 7 rankings.

Junior outside hitter Maia Schwalger led the attack with nine kills. Maija Mortensen and Berkleigh Minnick added eight kills apiece, and senior setter Nafanua Alofipo ran the offense with 27 assists, the Deseret News reported.

Corner Canyon jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first set. The Chargers never trailed.

The second set was tighter. Skyridge, coached by Siale Hifo, built an 8-4 advantage before Corner Canyon ripped off a 12-0 run to seize control. The Chargers closed the third set 25-22 to complete the sweep.

Head coach Mindy Ricks said fast starts have been a season-long emphasis. "We've been working really hard on starting strong," Ricks told the Deseret News after the match. She said she was impressed by the grit her players showed from the opening serve.

Ricks said the No. 1 ranking brings attention everywhere the team goes. She told the Deseret News her players treat the pressure as a privilege and use it as motivation to keep improving. When Skyridge closed gaps, the Chargers made quick adjustments and kept attacking.

Corner Canyon also holds a national profile. The Chargers appeared at No. 44 in the MaxPreps national rankings on Sept. 1 when they were 7-0.

Corner Canyon's next match had not been posted to the team's public schedule as of Wednesday, Sept. 16. Skyridge's next Region 3 match is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 17, at home against No. 2 Lone Peak.
