A driver is accused of killing a motorist who was changing a flat tire on the shoulder of Interstate 80 in Parleys Canyon late on Oct. 30.
Peter Joseph Hoffelmeyer was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of second-degree felony automobile homicide and misdemeanor DUI, KUTV reported. ABC4 and KSL reported he also faces an allegation of failure to stay in a single lane. He has not yet been formally charged, according to ABC4.
The crash happened just before midnight near mile marker 131 on westbound I-80, according to a police booking affidavit cited by multiple outlets. Investigators said Hoffelmeyer left his lane and struck a disabled vehicle parked on the right shoulder. A person outside that vehicle was changing a tire and died at the scene.
The victim's identity has not been officially released, according to KUTV. Hoffelmeyer and a passenger in his vehicle were taken to a hospital with injuries described as unknown.
A witness who stopped after the crash told Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) troopers that Hoffelmeyer appeared to be under the influence, according to the affidavit. At the hospital, a trooper noted Hoffelmeyer had red, glossy and bloodshot eyes and detected an odor of alcohol on his breath, KUTV reported.
Hoffelmeyer allegedly told investigators he had consumed four mixed drinks before driving and that his last drink was an hour before he got behind the wheel. A breath test measured his blood-alcohol content at 0.14%, nearly three times Utah's legal limit of 0.05%.
That is a striking number.
Hoffelmeyer was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Nov. 1 and is being held without bail, according to ABC4. News outlets reported his age differently: KUTV and ABC4 listed him as 48, while KSL listed him as 47.
All charges are allegations. Hoffelmeyer is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
