Montana Fouts has 53 strikeouts, seven wins, and the AUSL's single-game strikeout record. The Utah Talons' ace pitcher has locked up the No. 1 seed heading into the league's championship series, which begins Saturday, July 25, in College Station, Texas.

If the Talons win, it will be their second straight title. Fouts pitched a complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts in Game 2 of last year's championship, helping Utah sweep the Chicago Bandits on July 27, 2025, to claim the inaugural AUSL crown.

She's been even better in 2026. Fouts set the AUSL single-game strikeout record on Thursday, June 19, fanning 12 batters and retiring 16 in a row against the Texas Volts, according to the AUSL's official website. Her 2.56 ERA ranks sixth in the league, and she's tied atop the strikeout leaderboard with Carolina Blaze rookie Karlyn Pickens at 53 apiece, per the Leaf Chronicle. Both surpassed the previous single-season record of 51, with the regular season ending Monday, July 20.

The numbers are remarkable given where Fouts was two years ago. After her Alabama career ended in 2023, the four-time All-American who threw a perfect game in the 2021 Women's College World Series felt hollow.

"I didn't really have that love for it anymore," Fouts told the Deseret News. "I still loved the process — like, I love everything about softball. But I knew in that moment I wasn't loving it enough to do what I wanted to do."

Fouts said she turned to prayer in 2025, asking God to restore her passion for the game. She described the result as feeling like she was 8 years old again, unable to stay away from the pitcher's circle. The Talons drafted her in the ninth round (35th overall) on January 29, 2025, and she recorded the first strikeout in AUSL history on June 7, 2025, in the league's opening game.

Under head coach Cindy Ball-Malone and general manager Lisa Fernandez, the Talons have built a powerhouse at Dumke Family Stadium at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. The 2026 season marks the AUSL's shift from its inaugural touring format to a city-based league with six permanent teams, and Utah has been the class of the field.

Fouts told the Deseret News she credits her faith for the fearless approach she brings to the mound, saying she pitches without fear of the outcome because she trusts God's plan for her.

The championship series schedule: Game 1 airs Saturday, July 25, at 11 a.m. MT on ABC. Game 2 is Sunday, July 26, at noon MT on ESPN. Game 3, if necessary, is Monday, July 27, at 5 p.m. MT on ESPN2. All games are at Davis Diamond on the Texas A&M campus.
