A 59-year-old man who pointed a handgun at police officers and fired a shot during a standoff at a Bluffdale hotel near the Draper city line is facing two second-degree felony charges and is being held without bail.

Kevin Cheatwood was arrested Friday, July 24, at the WoodSpring Suites extended-stay hotel at 1478 W. 14000 South after officers responded to what was initially reported as a medical call, according to arrest documents released Sunday, July 26.

Cheatwood faces two counts of assault on a peace officer with use of a dangerous weapon, both second-degree felonies, along with two counts of felony discharge of a firearm (third-degree felonies), criminal mischief for damage valued at $500 to $1,400 (Class A misdemeanor) and interfering with a peace officer (Class B misdemeanor), the arrest document states. Jail records show he is being held without bail. No arraignment date has been publicly announced.

How the standoff unfolded

Police were dispatched at approximately 6:45 p.m. Friday after Cheatwood's fiancée called to report he had been making statements about harming himself throughout the day, according to the arrest document filed by a Saratoga Springs Police Department officer. The caller said she heard a single gunshot from the suite's bathroom but could not open the door.

Officers arriving at the room found multiple firearms and a Taser on a table. They removed Cheatwood's fiancée and his juvenile child to a safe area before attempting contact.

When officers entered the bathroom and identified themselves, they found Cheatwood sitting in the bathtub. He produced a handgun and pointed it at them, the arrest document states. Officers began retreating to cover while issuing commands, and a single gunshot was heard.

Additional officers from multiple agencies arrived to assist. After a period of continued commands, officers regained entry and Cheatwood complied. He was taken into custody and placed in a patrol vehicle.

No officers were injured. A sweep of the hotel found no injured parties on any floor.

"There was a little bit of a standoff. The officers backed out of the room, and the male fired a round off inside the bathroom," Lt. Zach Robinson of Bluffdale Police told Gephardt Daily on Saturday, July 25, in the department's initial account of the incident.
