Draper residents facing dangerous heat this weekend can cool off for free at county recreation centers on Sunday, August 2, after Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson's office extended hours at five facilities through 8 p.m.

The nearest option for Draper families is Dimple Dell Recreation Center, 10670 S. 1000 East in Sandy. The Cool Zone there opens at 3 p.m. and stays available until 8 p.m. Sunday. The building itself opens at 10 a.m.

The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City is forecasting daytime highs in the low 100s across the Salt Lake Valley through the weekend, with warm overnight temperatures offering little relief. Salt Lake City hit a record 109 degrees earlier in July, and the Salt Lake Tribune reported this marks the valley's third consecutive triple-digit weekend.

The mayor's office announcement, reported by Gephardt Daily, designates the five recreation centers as Cool Zones with extended Sunday evening access. Salt Lake County Emergency Management confirmed the plan Friday, July 31, on X, describing Cool Zones as free, air-conditioned public spaces where residents can cool off safely.

Visitors do not need to buy a recreation center pass to use a Cool Zone. The designated spaces offer air-conditioned seating, and some locations have water bottle filling stations.

• Dimple Dell Recreation Center, 10670 S. 1000 East, Sandy — Cool Zone 3–8 p.m.
• Northwest Recreation Center, 1255 Clark Ave., Salt Lake City — Cool Zone 2:30–8 p.m.
• Taylorsville Recreation Center, 4948 S. 2700 West, Taylorsville — Cool Zone 3–8 p.m.
• JL Sorenson Recreation Center, 5350 W. Herriman Main St., Herriman — Cool Zone 3–8 p.m.
• SLC Sports Complex, 645 S. Guardsman Way, Salt Lake City — Cool Zone 5–8 p.m.

All other Salt Lake County recreation centers will also serve as Cool Zones during their normal weekend hours.

County officials are urging residents to check on older adults, young children, and outdoor workers during the heat. The National Weather Service advises staying hydrated, taking frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning, and watching for signs of heat illness. Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle.

The Weigand Center, 437 W. 200 South in Salt Lake City, is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for anyone needing relief, including people experiencing homelessness.
