Guardsman Pass is closed to all traffic through at least Thursday morning after remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel dumped debris across SR-190.
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) announced the closure Monday, Oct. 12, at 9:30 p.m., citing storm damage and winter conditions. The agency's estimated reopening is the morning of Thursday, Oct. 15, though an exact time has not been set.
The closure affects Draper-area drivers who use the pass to reach Park City or as an alternate route when lower Big Cottonwood Canyon is blocked.
Heavy rain Sunday, Oct. 11, washed trees, rocks and other debris into a box culvert along the canyon road, clogging it and sending water across the pavement, KUTV reported. That flooding shut down the lower portion of SR-190 in Big Cottonwood Canyon, and UDOT temporarily rerouted downhill traffic through Guardsman Pass while crews cleared debris near Storm Mountain.
The lower canyon road reopened just before 2 a.m. Monday. Hours later, UDOT closed Guardsman Pass itself.
"It was an intense storm, and it brought down a lot of trees, a lot of rocks, just everything that you see on the mountainside here," UDOT Public Relations Director John Gleason told ABC4 on Monday.
Gleason said crews have positioned excavators and loaders throughout the state and are monitoring burn scars for additional flooding or mudslides. He warned that more debris remains on the mountainside above the road and could come down again with additional rain.
Gleason also noted that much of the debris clogging culverts during recent storms came from a busy avalanche season three to four years ago, which left loose material on the slopes.
Most of Utah was under a flood watch Monday, according to the Deseret News, and UDOT cautioned that weather-related delays are possible over the next couple of days.
Travel is still allowed in the canyon below the Guardsman Pass closure point, according to UDOT's Cottonwood Canyons account on X.
