The Draper City Council adopted new signage rules for the site of Utah's first Rivian dealership on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
Ordinance #1740 amends signage rules in the Karl Malone Auto Center Commercial Special District. The change was requested by Logan Johnson of Wright Development Group on behalf of Smith Payne Lone Peak, LLC, in connection with a Rivian electric-vehicle dealership planned for roughly 6.16 acres at 11601 S. Lone Peak Pkwy.
The specific signage changes in the ordinance are not detailed in the city's public notice. The full text is on file at the Draper City Recorder's Office and at draperutah.gov.
Planning Commission backed the change
The amendment first went before the Draper City Planning Commission on Sept. 24, with a staff report prepared by Planning Manager Todd Draper. Commissioners voted 5-0 to forward a positive recommendation to the council, according to meeting records posted by OpenUtah.
The council held its own public hearing on the amendment Oct. 6 at Draper City Hall, 1020 E. Pioneer Rd. Official minutes and individual vote counts from that meeting have not been posted.
Rivian dealership background
The Rivian project has been moving through Draper's approval process since June. At a June 25 Planning Commission meeting, Johnson told commissioners the project would bring the first Rivian dealership to Utah. Karolina Kaczmarczyk, representing Rivian, said the company was excited to expand into Draper, provide more job opportunities and better serve its growing customer base, according to meeting minutes.
The commission approved the dealership's site plan and a cross-access deviation at the June 25 meeting.
Rezone at New Hope Drive
In a separate action the same night, the council adopted Ordinance #1739, the Snow Zoning Map Amendment. The ordinance rezones roughly 1.35 acres at 960 E. New Hope Dr. from RA1 to RA2, cutting the minimum lot size from 40,000 square feet to 20,000 square feet. Staff planner Nick Whittaker prepared the staff report.
The rezone first went before the Planning Commission at a Sept. 10 public hearing. Vote tallies are not public. As with Ordinance #1740, the council's individual vote count has not been published.
Both adoption notices were attested by City Recorder Nicole Smedley and posted Oct. 7. Residents can review the full ordinance text at the Draper City Recorder's Office or at draperutah.gov.
