Draper's Widowmaker motorcycle hill climb is getting a permanent marker. The unveiling ceremony is set for Saturday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. at the Widowmaker Flight Park.
The Draper Historic Preservation Commission voted 3-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 30, to approve the full coordination plan for the dedication. The vote capped months of planning that included coordination with local motorcycle clubs, Salt Lake County officials and Draper City staff.
The plaque honors the Widowmaker hill climb on Steep Mountain and the Bee's Motorcycle Club. The annual event drew riders and spectators to the Point of the Mountain from 1965 to 1988, according to a Utah Riders Association newsletter. The Salt Lake Tribune gave the climb its name, and the event appeared in the 1971 motorcycle documentary "On Any Sunday." Real estate development, environmental concerns and crowd management issues ended the Draper runs in 1988.
Commissioners reviewed the full event lineup at the Sept. 30 meeting, according to the commission's agenda. The ceremony will include scheduled speakers, a looping video of historical footage, and artifact displays featuring vintage motorcycles and memorabilia from the Kimball family. Catering and power are arranged.
KSL reporter Alex Cabrero is part of the media outreach effort for the event, commission records show.
The commission also discussed parking lot setup, fire turnaround restrictions and trailhead restroom maintenance at the venue. Weather contingencies were addressed at an earlier Sept. 9 meeting.
The commission set the Oct. 10 date at its Aug. 19 meeting. As of February 2026, the group was still working with Salt Lake County to resolve plaque installation costs at the flight park site. Whether those costs have been settled is unclear from commission records.
