Corner Canyon's bid for a fourth consecutive 6A boys golf state championship faces a steep climb after Day 1 at TalonsCove Golf Course in Saratoga Springs.
The Chargers shot 294 as a team Monday, Oct. 12, landing in a tie for ninth with Bingham in the 17-team field. Lehi leads at 276, a full 18 strokes ahead, according to results first reported by the Deseret News.
Junior Drew Wilson gave Corner Canyon its best individual card, firing a 3-under 69 to sit tied for eighth among individuals. Wilson carried the lowest stroke average in 6A this season at 65.8 and won the Region 3 medalist title Oct. 7 at Sleepy Ridge with a 64. Kairo Richardson added a 73, tying for 23rd.
The gap at the top is wide. Lehi finished seven strokes clear of second-place Skyridge (283), with Davis one stroke further back at 284. Farmington (288) and American Fork (289) round out the top five.
Lehi sophomore Crue Harward paced the individual field with a 7-under 65, two strokes ahead of Davis' Jackson Gross and Lehi teammate Jordan Ofahengaue, who each shot 67. Defending 6A individual champion Blake Brown of Lone Peak posted a 68, tied for fourth.
Corner Canyon has won the 6A team title each of the past three seasons. Between the Chargers and Region 3 rival Lone Peak, the two programs have claimed 12 of the last 13 championships in Utah's top classification, according to the Lehi Free Press. Lone Peak sits seventh at 291 after Day 1.
Lehi's roster does not include a single senior. The Pioneers finished ninth at state a year ago, according to the Lehi Free Press, making their 18-stroke cushion all the more striking.
The final round is set for Tuesday, Oct. 13, at TalonsCove.
