The board overseeing Draper's largest development project holds its next public meeting at 9 a.m. Wednesday, August 12, in Room 445 of the Utah State Capitol, 350 N. State St., Salt Lake City.

The Point of the Mountain State Land Authority's 12-member board meets on the second Wednesday of each month to guide the transformation of the former Utah State Prison site into a mixed-use innovation community. The 600-acre property sits at the junction of Salt Lake and Utah counties along Interstate 15, in the heart of the Silicon Slopes tech corridor.

Project background

The Utah Legislature created the Land Authority in 2018 through House Bill 372 and has since allocated $165 million for backbone infrastructure at the site, according to an October 2024 press release from the authority. An additional $250 million has been appropriated toward a potential FrontRunner commuter rail station near the property.

Phase I covers 72 acres near the center of the site. The project's framework plan, created by architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, calls for an innovation district, multimodal transportation, roughly one-quarter of the land preserved as parks and open space, and a mix of retail, entertainment, and housing. The planning process incorporated input from more than 10,000 Utahns, according to the authority.

Executive Director Mike Ambre took the role in October 2024 after 24 years leading the Utah Division of Facilities Construction and Management. Land Development Director Nick Duerksen, a former Utah Transit Authority project manager hired in June 2024, oversees Phase I implementation.

The board includes state legislators, agency executives, local elected officials, and business leaders. State Rep. Jordan Teuscher serves as co-chair.
