Corner Canyon High School cut the ribbon on a 36,000-square-foot field house that gives every Canyons School District high school an indoor practice facility.

The $13.5 million building, which opened in December 2025, includes an indoor practice field and an expanded weight room, according to the Draper Journal. The school held a ribbon-cutting ceremony in September while the Chargers' football team stood at 3-0 on the young season. The field house was part of a larger campus project that also added a security vestibule and upgrades to the baseball, softball and soccer fields.

District Business Administrator Leon Wilcox said the outdoor field improvements were completed first because of flooding and safety concerns. The new weight facility, paired with the school's existing weight room, lets more students and teams train at the same time.

With Corner Canyon's and Jordan High's field houses now finished, all five of the district's comprehensive high schools have indoor practice space.

The ceremony also marked the formal start of the Casey Sutera coaching era. Sutera replaced longtime head coach Eric Kjar after Kjar left in December 2025 to become head coach at Weber State University. Sutera is no stranger to the program. He spent eight years as Corner Canyon's defensive coordinator, helping the Chargers win three 6A state championships, before leading Brighton High School for four seasons.

At Brighton, Sutera posted a 35-14 record, won three Region 6 titles and earned 2024 5A Coach of the Year honors.

"We love the success that happens on the field, but what you guys don't see, is it's because of the work we put in," Sutera told the ribbon-cutting crowd, adding that his players had spent the summer training in the new facility.

Kjar left behind a 112-10 record over nine seasons, six state championships in 2018-20 and 2023-25, and a Utah-record 48 consecutive wins from 2018 to 2021. Principal Dina Kohler acknowledged the transition at the ceremony, telling attendees it was time to welcome the Sutera era.

Superintendent McKay Robinson said the field house serves all students, not just athletes. The building is available for physical education classes as well as every athletic team.

The Chargers entered Week 9 ranked No. 3 in the KSL Sports Top 25 with a 6-2 overall record and a 1-1 mark in 6A Region 3, according to MaxPreps. Corner Canyon travels to No. 7 American Fork on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m.
