Juan Diego Catholic's boys cross country team finished third at the 4A Region 10 championships, led by a pair of underclassmen who crossed the finish line less than a second apart.
Sophomore Isamu Downey and freshman Thomas Schoeman placed seventh and eighth at the region meet at Cottonwood Complex on Thursday, Oct. 8. Downey clocked 16:38.6 and Schoeman 16:38.9. Three-tenths of a second separated them. Senior Seamus Arndt, the Soaring Eagles' top returner for the 2026 season, finished 17th in 17:07.0.
The three finishers helped Juan Diego post a team score of 85 points. Jordan won the boys title with 31 points, and Judge Memorial took second with 77.
On the girls side, Juan Diego placed seventh with 161 points. Freshman Gabrielle Beall led the Soaring Eagles girls, finishing 18th overall in 21:41.9. Highland won the girls championship with 30 points, edging Park City's 32.
Arndt entered the region meet after a strong early season. He set a school record at the Premier Cross Country Invitational, finishing eighth in the 4A division with a time of 16:35.7. Coach Andrew Zinman praised Arndt in an Aug. 31 Deseret News feature, saying "Seamus has worked exceptionally hard the past four years to improve as a runner, and that hard work has paid off for him to start his senior cross country season."
Downey and Schoeman, both running their first region championship for Juan Diego, give the program a young core heading into the postseason.
Both the boys and girls teams advance to the 4A Divisional meet on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Lakeside Park in Orem, according to Deseret News region recaps. Runners who qualify there move on to the 4A state championship meet on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at Sugarhouse Park.
