Draper-area commuters who use northbound I-215 to reach the airport, I-80, or Redwood Road will need alternate routes starting Tuesday, July 28, when UDOT shuts down three off-ramps for bridge work.

The closures begin at 8 p.m. Tuesday and will last weeks. The northbound I-215 ramp to westbound I-80, a primary route to Salt Lake City International Airport, closes for approximately 35 days. The northbound I-215 ramp to eastbound I-80 also closes for roughly 35 days. Both are expected to reopen shortly before Labor Day, September 7.

The longest closure hits the northbound I-215 ramp to Redwood Road, which will remain shut through Friday, October 2.

UDOT directs drivers to use Bangerter Highway, I-15, or State Route 201 as alternates, particularly for airport-bound traffic.

A fourth ramp at the same interchange, Redwood Road to northbound I-215, is already closed and will remain closed through July 2027.

Part of a larger project

The closures are part of the I-215 West Improved project, a multi-year effort running from SR-201 to North Temple that involves rehabilitating 30 bridges and improving 14 miles of ramps. The project began in July 2025 and is expected to wrap up in late summer 2027.

UDOT Project Manager John Montoya said the bridge work is about staying ahead of maintenance. "Much like a car or a home, a bridge requires different kinds of maintenance throughout its life," Montoya said. "Staying ahead of that maintenance helps keep our transportation system safe and reliable, and helps us get the most from the infrastructure Utahns have already invested in."

As of June 12, UDOT had completed 13 of 30 bridges and shifted traffic onto newly rebuilt pavement between SR-201 and I-80, according to a UDOT press release marking the project's halfway point.

The 35-day estimate for the two I-80 ramps is weather-dependent and subject to change. UDOT's project hotline is 855-215-UDOT, and updates are available at udottraffic.utah.gov or through the UDOT Traffic app.

The next milestone for affected commuters: the two I-80 ramps reopening before Labor Day, with the Redwood Road ramp following on October 2.
