Corner Canyon travels to American Fork on Thursday, Oct. 8, for a 7 p.m. Region 3 game broadcast live on KJZZ and KMYU.
Both teams enter at 6-2 overall. Their recent form, though, tells different stories. The Chargers shut out Cedar Valley 56-0 on Friday, Oct. 2, while the Cavemen fell to Lehi 20-19 the same night on a touchdown with 1:01 left.
Corner Canyon (2-1 in Region 3) sits one game behind unbeaten Skyridge in the region standings. American Fork (1-1) needs a win to keep pace. A loss by either team would make the path to a region title much steeper.
How to watch
The broadcast is part of the Thursday Night Rivals series on KJZZ and KMYU, which aired the American Fork–Lone Peak game Sept. 24.
What Corner Canyon brings
The 56-0 rout of Cedar Valley featured big plays on all three phases. Receiver Beckham Coon, running back Jackson Carruth, punt returner Josh Harris and defensive back Will Tenney each scored, according to the Deseret News.
Senior quarterback Jaxon Pehrson ran for three touchdowns in the Chargers' 37-14 Region 3 opening win over Lone Peak on Sept. 18. Head coach Casey Sutera, in his first season leading the Chargers after returning from a head-coaching stint at Brighton to succeed six-time state champion coach Eric Kjar, praised his team's physicality after the Lone Peak win.
"You have to match (Lone Peak's) intensity but also balance (that with) execution," Sutera said after the Sept. 18 victory. "I thought we did a really good job of that tonight."
Corner Canyon's lone region stumble came Sept. 25, when Skyridge jumped out to a 27-0 lead and held on for a 37-27 win in Lehi.
What American Fork brings
American Fork held a 19-14 lead late in the fourth quarter on Friday, Oct. 2, before Lehi scored with just over a minute remaining to win 20-19.
Sophomore quarterback Jake Matsen has been the Cavemen's offensive engine. He threw for 285 yards and four touchdowns in a 28-24 win over Lone Peak on Sept. 24, according to the American Fork Citizen. Head coach Aaron Behm called that Sept. 24 contest a game between "two really good teams coming down to the wire."
The bigger picture
Corner Canyon is chasing a fourth consecutive 6A state championship under a new coaching staff. Unbeaten Skyridge leads Region 3, so the Chargers cannot afford another region loss if they want to control their playoff positioning.
Thursday's game at American Fork is Corner Canyon's second region road contest of the season.
