Corner Canyon senior Heidi Mills ran 19:04.5 to finish fifth overall, leading the Chargers' girls cross country team to a third-place finish at the Park City Twilight meet Aug. 20 at Quinn's Junction Athletic Fields in Park City.

The 3-mile race at altitude drew 16 scoring girls teams from across Utah and entries from Elko, Nevada. Corner Canyon posted 136 points, edging Mountain View (140) and Highland (146) in a tight battle for the podium spots behind dominant Riverton (35 points) and runner-up Mountain Ridge (111.5).

Mills was the lone Charger in the top 10. Her fifth-place time put her ahead of Highland junior Lena Buccambuso (19:17.8) and Riverton sophomore Taylor Oman (19:18.4). Olympus senior Adria Favero won the individual title in 18:10.4, followed by Riverton's Isabel Preston (18:23.6), Green Canyon's Lizzie McFarland (18:44.4) and Riverton's Ella Hodges (18:54.9).

Riverton's team depth proved decisive. The Silverwolves placed four runners in the top eight to secure the team title, according to the Deseret News.

The margin between third and fifth in the team standings was just 10 points. Corner Canyon's 136 separated the Chargers from Mountain View and Highland by four and 10 points, respectively, a gap that could narrow or widen as teams sharpen their packs through September invitationals.

The full girls team top five: Riverton (35), Mountain Ridge (111.5), Corner Canyon (136), Mountain View (140) and Highland (146). Olympus (159), Westlake (169.5) and Park City (204) rounded out the top eight.

The UHSAA 6A State Cross Country Championships are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City.
