Corner Canyon will field players in all five brackets when the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) 6A girls tennis state tournament resumes Thursday, Oct. 8, at Liberty Park Tennis Center in Salt Lake City.
All five Chargers entries earned first-round byes and open play in the Round of 16. Three singles players carry No. 4 seeds, and both doubles teams are seeded No. 5 in each 17-entry bracket, according to brackets published by the Deseret News.
A win in any bracket Thursday would send that player or team to the quarterfinals.
Singles matchups
Evelyn Marsh, the No. 4 seed in first singles, faces No. 13 Mary Anne Stinger of Westlake. Emery Rideout, seeded No. 4 in second singles, draws No. 13 Allison Savage of Herriman. Emily Creason, the No. 4 seed in third singles, meets No. 13 Inés Llorens of Syracuse.
All three Chargers singles players face lower-seeded opponents, each entering as the higher seed in her match.
Doubles matchups
Ruchi Pawar and Anna Dorny, seeded No. 5 in first doubles, face No. 12 Rowan Burgess and Sidney Browning of Riverton. Kate Anderson and Savannah White, the No. 5 seed in second doubles, take on No. 12 Emrey Williams and Sloane Newsome of Mountain Ridge.
Corner Canyon entered the Region 3 tournament as the No. 2 seed but fell to No. 3 Skyridge 5-2 in the semifinals on Sept. 24 at Skyridge High School, as reported by the Lehi Free Press. Lone Peak won the Region 3 title.
Despite the region loss, the Chargers' individual seedings place them in the top third of every 6A bracket. The first round, held Saturday, Oct. 3, at Brighton High School, featured only the No. 16 vs. No. 17 matchup in each bracket. Corner Canyon's seeds were high enough to skip that round entirely.
The tournament continues Friday, Oct. 9, and Saturday, Oct. 10, at Liberty Park.
