Corner Canyon's quest for a fourth straight 6A state championship begins Friday, Aug. 14, when the top-ranked Chargers travel to Davis for a 7 p.m. kickoff televised on KJZZ.

It will be the first game under new head coach Casey Sutera, who replaced Eric Kjar after Kjar left for Weber State in December 2025. Sutera is no stranger to the program. He served as Kjar's defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2021, a stretch that produced three state titles, before spending four seasons as Brighton's head coach, where he went 35-14 and earned the 2024 5A Coach of the Year award.

"We know we have a high expectation because of the standard coach Kjar has created at Corner Canyon," Sutera told the Deseret News on July 20. "We expect to keep the same tradition and we know that starts with the process."

The Chargers return three offensive starters and five defensive starters from a team that went 12-2 and beat Lone Peak 35-20 in the 6A championship game in November 2025. Senior wide receiver Diesel Dart, a University of Utah commit, headlines the returning offense alongside senior running back Jackson Carruth and senior lineman Jackson West, also a Utah commit.

On defense, Dart doubles as a returning starter at safety, joined by West on the defensive line, senior linebacker Tate Patterson, senior defensive back Josh Harris and senior defensive lineman Mo Brown.

The biggest question mark is at quarterback. Senior Jaxon Pehrson takes over for Texas A&M commit Helaman Casuga, who threw for 3,487 yards and 37 touchdowns last season.

Davis presents a stiff opening test. The Darts are ranked No. 4 in the 6A coaches poll and return senior wide receiver and defensive back Bode Sparrow, the state's top-rated prospect and an Oklahoma commit. Sparrow hauled in 83 catches for 1,218 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2025 while adding seven interceptions and two pick-sixes on defense, according to On3. Davis also brings back four-star Utah commit Jaxton Itaaehau at receiver.

One subplot for college fans: Utah commits Dart and Itaaehau could match up directly, giving future Utes a head-to-head preview.

Corner Canyon's offense averaged 46.21 points per game last season, tops in 6A. The defense allowed 17.29 points per game, second in the classification. Offensive coordinator Wes Patterson and defensive coordinator Frankie Sutera will call the plays Friday.

As we reported July 30, the next marquee date on the schedule is a Sept. 18 home rematch against Lone Peak, a replay of last year's title game. Friday's opener at Davis will show Draper fans how ready this roster is for that run.
