Draper will use eminent domain to acquire private property for the Lone Peak Parkway widening project after the City Council approved Resolution #26-38 at its Tuesday, Aug. 4 meeting.

The vote authorizes the city to file an eminent domain action to acquire land along the corridor between 12300 South and 12650 South, where the road will be widened and realigned. Construction is planned for 2027, according to the city's Capital Improvement Program. The project has secured roughly $850,000 in corridor preservation funds and an additional $3 million in federal funding.

No acquisition price has been set. The cost will be determined through the eminent domain process, according to city records.

City attorney Traci Gundersen prepared the staff report for the resolution. The city has not publicly identified the property owners whose land is subject to the action.

Lone Peak Parkway runs through Draper's commercial district near the Silicon Slopes tech corridor at the Point of the Mountain. The widening will improve business access and ease commuter traffic along one of the city's busiest north-south routes.

Ivory Homes rezone tabled

The same meeting drew 28 speakers across six agenda items, including a public hearing on a proposed Ivory Homes development at 12430 S. 700 East.

The Council tabled Ordinance #1735 without a vote, sending the rezone request back for further study. As we reported Aug. 4, the city's Historic Preservation Commission had briefed the Council on the site ahead of the hearing.

The proposal would rezone approximately 1.67 acres from RA1 (40,000-square-foot minimum lots) and RA2 (20,000-square-foot minimum lots) to R4, which allows single-family homes on lots as small as 10,000 square feet. Planning manager Todd Draper prepared the staff report.

The OpenUtah meeting summary described the tabling as reflecting the Council's "ongoing caution regarding density and neighborhood compatibility."
