Draper City is inviting seniors and their caregivers to a free presentation on fraud schemes targeting older adults, the city announced Wednesday, Aug. 12.

The presentation will cover common scams directed at seniors, fraud-related crimes and vulnerable adult abuse, neglect and exploitation, according to the city's official social media account. The announcement did not include a date, time or location for the event. Residents who want to attend should RSVP to Rick at (385) 468-3323 for details.

The event comes as elder fraud losses climb sharply across Utah. In 2025, Utah adults age 60 and older filed 2,341 complaints with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, reporting $65.9 million in total losses. Investment fraud topped the list at $32.4 million, followed by tech support scams at $10.2 million and romance scams at $7.2 million.

Nationally, seniors lost more than $7.7 billion to fraud in 2025, a 37 percent increase over 2024, with the average victim losing more than $38,000.

The threat has hit close to home. The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office warned on Monday, July 27 that scammers were impersonating deputies by phone, demanding payment to avoid arrest. The office said it will never call residents and ask them to pay to avoid arrest or get a loved one out of jail, and urged anyone who receives such a call to hang up and report it to Salt Lake County non-emergency dispatch at 801-840-4000.

Draper City's own Planning Division previously issued an alert after a scammer impersonated the city manager via email, lifting details from a publicly posted meeting agenda to demand payment from a permit applicant. The city urged residents to verify any payment requests through official contact information at draperutah.gov.

The Utah Attorney General's office maintains fraud-prevention resources for residents at its Stop Fraud Utah website.
