Draper-area seniors ages 60 and older can sign up for a free 10-week program covering everything from sleep and finances to medication management, starting Monday, Aug. 24, at the Taylorsville Senior Center.
The Aging Mastery Program, run by Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services, meets every Monday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. through Nov. 2, according to the program listing. Each week, a different guest expert leads a session on one of 10 topics: exercise, sleep, healthy eating, financial fitness, advance care planning, healthy relationships, medication management, community engagement, falls prevention and navigating longer lives.
The program is free.
Participants earn points by completing action steps between sessions and take part in group discussions and peer support activities designed to help them build lasting habits. The curriculum goes well beyond a single-topic class, giving older adults a broad toolkit for managing health, money and social connections as they age.
The National Council on Aging developed the Aging Mastery Program and has rolled it out at hundreds of sites across the country. Dr. Susan Stiles, who helped design the curriculum at NCOA, said in a May 2022 interview with GetSetUp that "the overall objective is to deliver the program for free for as many people as possible." That free model applies to the Salt Lake County sessions, which are supported through the county's aging services department.
A separate session of the same program wrapped up Aug. 13 at a Sandy location. The Aug. 24 cohort is a fresh start for anyone who missed that round.
The Taylorsville Senior Center is at 4743 Plymouth View Dr. in nearby Taylorsville. To register or ask questions, call 385-468-3370 or visit saltlakecounty.gov/aging-adult-services.
